81-When the Sun Collapses and Dies / At-Takwir:

In God’s Name, whose Mercy is Great and Continuous:

(81:1)   When the sun fails,

(81:2)   when the stars fall,

(81:3)   when the mountains are blown away,

(81:4)   when your prized possessions are abandoned,

(81:5)   when the wild animals are gathered,

(81:6)   when the oceans burn,

(81:7)   when each soul is to its body returned,

(81:8)   when the aborted lives of babies are asked,

(81:9)   what did they do to deserve to be murdered,

(81:10) when the record books of what you did are opened,

(81:11) when the sky is torn apart,

(81:12) when Hell churns angrily about to burst open,

(81:13) when Heaven is brought close for all to see,

(81:14) then every person will know what they have brought with them for all eternity.

(81:15) I swear by the planets,

(81:16) which run in their orbits and go on their way;

(81:17) I swear by the night as it retreats,

(81:18) and by the dawn of a new day,

(81:19) this message was delivered by the great Angel Gabriel.

(81:20) He is powerful, in a strong position close to My Throne,

(81:21) obeyed by the angels and trustworthy.

(81:22) And the Prophet Muhammad was not crazy.

(81:23) I swear in the eastern sky he saw Angel Gabriel in his true form,

(81:24) and what he heard from him, he did not withhold.

(81:25) A cursed devil did not make up these words.

(81:26) So from here where are you going to go?

(81:27) This message is nothing more than a reminder,

(81:28) but it will only help those who want to live better.

(81:29) And you will not desire to live a straight life until I, the Lord of everyone, bless your heart with that desire. So turn to Me in humble submission.

CHAPTER NOTES:

Verse 1: The Arabic in this verse describes something that collapses on itself by rotation into a small ball.
Verse 4:
This verse literally says, “When the pregnant camel is abandoned.” In the culture of the Arabs a pregnant camel was a very valuable possession that they took especial care of. The broader understanding was used in translating the verse.
Verse 8
: The Arabic in this verse is more specifically translated “When the baby girls buried alive are asked.” This verse was addressing a practice committed occasionally by some Arab tribes of female infanticide. Unfortunately, this practice of preferring male babies to female babies persists till today in various parts of the world. However, getting rid of unwanted babies today is done by abortion. We know that on the Day of Judgment, the victims of all the cruel and barbaric injustices that people do to the weak and powerless will be asked to speak and face their oppressors. Then God will give them justice. It seems reasonable then, that a broad understanding of this verse would include babies killed in the womb, for no valid reason, after the baby has been given a soul.
