85-The Constellations / Al-Buruj:

In God’s Name, whose Mercy is Great and Continuous:

(85:1)   I swear by the night sky and its constellations,

(85:2)   and by the day I promise is coming,

(85:3)   and by those who will witness it and what they will be seeing,

(85:4)   the people of the ditch are cursed.

(85:5)   Because they filled it with fuel burning.

(85:6)   Then at the edge of the ditch they were sitting;

(85:7)   watching those who would not renounce their faith in Me being thrown in.

(85:8)   And the only thing they had against them was their belief in Me, the all powerful and praiseworthy.

(85:9)   I own everything in the heavens and the earth, and I see everything happening.

(85:10) Those who hurt the believing men and women to try to get them to leave their religion, and then didn’t repent, will have the punishment of Hell, the punishment of eternal burning.

(85:11) But those who believe My message and do good deeds, will have gardens with rivers flowing. That is the greatest victory you can achieve from living.

(85:12) My punishment is severe.

(85:13) I created you and will bring you back,

(85:14) and I am loving and forgiving.

(85:15) My Throne is the greatest and most powerful,

(85:16) and I do anything I want to.

(85:17-18) Didn’t the news reach you? The armies of Pharaoh and Thamud fought my religion. Don’t you know what I did to them?

(85:19) Those who reject this message are terrible liars because they know what happened to those before them.

(85:20) And I have them surrounded. They cannot escape their destruction.

(85:21) This Quran is not made up. It is a great book full of wisdom and guidance,

(85:22) written and preserved, protected from corruption.

Chapter Notes:

Verses 4-8: These verses are referring to a major persecution of a sect of early Christians, probably Ebionites, who believed that only the creator God was divine and worthy of worship. This persecution happed in the land of Yemen to the South of Makkah. Huge ditches were dug and fires were built in them by the king in the area. Whoever renounced their faith in God was allowed to live, and whoever didn’t was thrown in.
Verse 17-18: The tribe of Thamud was a major tribe and ancient civilization that lived several hundred miles to the North of Makkah. The civilization was destroyed, leaving behind their homes and buildings which they had carved into the side of mountains. Their vacant remains can still be visited today.

Verse 22: This verse refers to the “Preserved Table” in which God wrote down everything that will ever happen till the end of time. So the Quran is preserved and protected, and it will remain protected till the end of time.
