(91:1) I swear by the sun in the morning,
(91:2) and by the moon that follows it in the evening,
(91:3) and by the day as it reveals it,
(91:4) and by the night as it hides it,
(91:5) and by the sky and how it is built,
(91:6) and by the earth and what smoothes it,
(91:7) and by the soul, and I who created it,
(91:8) I taught each of you the path of good and the path of evil,
(91:9) those who purify their souls are successful,
(91:10) and those who bury their souls in sin are a failure.
(91:11) The tribe of Thamud disbelieved My messenger, because they were excessively sinful.
(91:12) They sent the worst among them to kill My camel.
(91:13) Prophet Salih said to them, “This is God’s camel, so don’t kill it. Let it drink water.”
(91:14) They said he was a liar and slaughtered it. So they were completely wiped out,
(91:15) and I was not afraid of holding them accountable.
CHAPTER NOTES:
God sent the tribe of Thamud a messenger named Saleh. To make fun of him, the people of Thamud gave a detailed description of a camel they wanted God to give them out of a huge stone. Prophet Saleh made them swear that they would submit to God if such a miracle was done for them. They did, and God gave them that miracle. Then they refused to submit and they killed the camel. So God destroyed them.
