2-The Cow / Baqarah -Part 3:

(2:122) Oh Children of Israel, remember the blessings I gave you, and keep in mind all of the unique blessings that I gave only to you.

(2:123) Then protect yourselves from the punishment of the day when no one can settle your debts for you, no one will be accepted as a replacement for you, no intercession will benefit you, and no one can do anything to support or protect you.

(2:124) Remember, I tested Abraham with orders and he completely fulfilled them. I said, “For all people, I am making you a leader.” He said, “And from my children?” I said, “Yes, I will also select messengers from among them, but I do not accept the unjust and sinful as leaders of my religion.”

(2:125) Remember, I made the Kabbah, which he built, a house of worship for people to return to regularly, and I ordered that people can stay there safely. So where Abraham stood, turn to Me praying sincerely. And I gave the command to Abraham and Ismail, his son, “Keep my house clean for those who worship Me praying as they circle it, stay the night, or bow and prostrate in humble submission.”

(2:126) Remember, Abraham said, “My Lord, make this land safe, and from its fruits, bless its people who believe in You and the Day of Resurrection.” I answered, “Yes, and for a period of time, I will give from its fruits to those who respond to Me with rejection. Then I will drive them into Hell’s punishment as their terrible destination.”

(2:127) Remember what Abraham and Ismail were saying as they built the foundation, “Oh Lord, accept our work. You hear and know everything, and you know our pure intention.

(2:128) Oh Lord, protect and strengthen our faith, and produce a people who submit to you from our children. Teach us the rituals of pilgrimage to your house, and accept our repentance easily.  You forgive and accept those who repent to you quickly, and bless those who submit to you with your continuous mercy.

(2:129) Oh Lord, and select from our children a messenger who lives with them. A messenger who will recite your revelation to them, teach them the meaning of your book and laws and wisdom in their application, and show them how to purify their hearts from sin. You are all powerful and insightful in your actions.”

(2:130) Other than the fools who harm themselves, who would dislike and turn away from Abraham’s religion? I selected him in this life, and in the next, he will be with the good people in Heaven.

(2:131) Remember, I said to him: “Submit to Me.” He responded immediately, “I submit to the one who owns and takes care of everyone freely.”

(2:132) And Abraham taught his children, and Jacob taught his saying, “God has chosen for you the true religion. So do not die except in a state of submission.”

(2:133) Were you there when Jacob was on his death bed asking his children, “Who will you worship after I am gone?” They said, “We will worship and obey your Lord: The Lord of your fathers Abraham, Ismail, and Isaac until our time comes. We will worship the one true God and obey only Him in humble submission.”

(2:134) All of them are now gone. They will get what they deserve, and you will get what you deserve without being asked about them on the Day of Resurrection.

(2:135) They say: To be guided become a Jew or a Christian. Say, “Guidance is to turn to the truth of Abraham’s religion. Other than God, he didn’t call upon or obey anyone.”

(2:136) Say to them, “We believe in God and the Quran, his message to us, and the message God sent to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob’s decedents before us. We believe in Moses and Jesus and what was given to them and the scripture the messengers received from God as revelation. We accept all of God’s messengers, and we turn to him in humble submission.”

(2:137) Then if they believe like you believe, they have found the true religion, but if they turn away then that is the side they have chosen. I will take care of them for you. I hear everything, and I know everything they do.

(2:138) Tell them, “Abraham’s religion will purify you. Who is better than God to baptize you? Join us in accepting God’s religion: worshiping and obeying only him.”

(2:139) Say, “How can you argue with us when God is our Lord and your Lord as He is the Lord of all creation? We are each accountable for what we do individually, and we have made service to God our pure intention.

(2:140) Or do you claim that Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob’s decedents were Jews or Christians? Say to them, “Do you know better than God regarding their condition? We are sharing this with you, because who is more unjust and evil than the one who conceals God’s testament from people? God is aware of what you are saying, and your time is coming.

(2:141) The people who lived before you are now gone. They will get what they deserve, and you will get what you deserve without being asked about them on the Day of Resurrection.”

Chapter Notes:

Verse 138: The Arabic uses the same word used by Christians and Jews when they baptize individuals with water cleans them and enter them as members of the faith. So it is as if you want God to baptize you, spiritually clean you, and accept you as a follower of His religion, then follow the religion of Abraham of only worshiping and obeying God in every aspect of your life.
