80-He Frowned / Abasa:

In God’s Name, whose Mercy is Great and Continuous:

(80:1)   The Prophet Muhammad turned away frowning,

(80:2)   because a blind man interrupted his meeting.

(80:3)   Oh Muhammad, how do you know? Maybe by teaching him, he would purify himself from sin,

(80:4)   or maybe he would learn and the reminder will benefit him.

(80:5)   As for the leaders of Makkah who feel that they don’t need what you are teaching,

(80:6)   you focus on them trying to be convincing,

(80:7)   when you are not responsible if they don’t stop their wrongdoing.

(80:8)   The blind man came to you hurrying,

(80:9)   fearful of disobeying Me and interested in learning,

(80:10) and you were too busy to pay attention to him!

(80:11) No, what you did was wrong. This message is a reminder to everyone.

(80:12) Focus on those who want to learn. They will be the ones to benefit from its warning.

(80:13) This message is preserved on honored pages;

(80:14) lifted high in status and kept pure from errors.

(80:15-16) It is in the hands of honorable and good messengers, so don’t think that you need Makkah’s leaders.

(80:17) People like them are cursed. Arrogant and ungrateful,

(80:18) what were they made from that makes them feel so exceptional?

(80:19) I created their bodies out of fluid that is miserable.

(80:20) Then I made their birth and lives easy and livable.

(80:21) Then when they die I have ordered their burial.

(80:22) Then when I want, I bring them back for a life eternal.

(80:23) No, people like them have no right to be ungrateful. And they have not submitted to what I have ordered.

(80:24) They should look at what they are eating to see what I have provided.

(80:25) Didn’t I send you pouring rain?you  het  nigthis blessed night

(80:26-27) Didn’t I make the earth break open with plants growing grain,

(80:28) grapes and herbs,

(80:29) olives and palm trees,

(80:30,31) meadows and thick orchards, giving you fruits and vegetables,

(80:32) a source of food and comfort for you and your animals?

(80:33) A day is coming when they will be startled by a scream that is deafening.

(80:34) On that day they will run from their brother,

(80:35) their mother and father,

(80:36) and wife and children.

(80:37) On that day they will care only for their own well-being.

(80:38-39) On that day, some faces will be happy, bright and laughing.

(80:40) On that day, some faces will be dirty,

(80:41) dark, and humiliated for what they will be realizing.

(80:42) They will be the sinful people who rejected this warning.

Ibn Um-Maktoom was a blind nephew of Khadija, the wife of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. One day Prophet Muhammad, was trying to convince a group of the leaders of Makkah to accept the message of the Quran. He thought if the leaders would accept it, all of Makkah would convert. Ibn Um-Maktoom didn’t realize what was going on so he interrupted him saying, “Oh Messenger of God, guide me.” Prophet Muhammad got upset for being interrupted. He turned away from Ibn Um-Maktoom to the person he was talking to saying, “Do you see anything wrong with what I am teaching?” The person kept responding sarcastically, “I swear by the sacrifices we make for our idols, No.” After this chapter was revealed, Prophet Muhammad took special care of Ibn Um-Maktoom and never made the same mistake again.
