73-Wrapped with Responsibility / Al-Muzzammil:

In God’s Name, whose Mercy is Great and Continuous:

(73:1)   Oh Muhammad, you are wrapped with an important responsibility.

(73:2)   So stay up most of the night praying sincerely:

(73:3)   Half or a little less,

(73:4)   or a little more and keep reciting the Quran clearly.

(73:5)   You will be responsible for teaching the Quran, a heavy duty.

(73:6)   Getting up at night is difficult, but to your heart and mind, it brings clarity.

(73:7-8) You have a lot of things to do during the day, so put it all behind you and focus on remembering Me.

(73:9)   I am the Lord of the East and the West, there is no god deserving of worship except Me, so make yourself completely dependent on Me.

(73:10) Be patient with what they say about you, and turn away from them nicely.

(73:11) Leave to me those who call this message a lie. They may have wealth and power now, but just wait till they die.

(73:12) I have chains to tie them and raging fire to burn them;

(73:13) stuff that won’t go down their throat to feed them and a lot of other painful punishment to treat them.

(73:14) It is coming on the day the earth and the mountains will shake, and the mountains will be like sand piles that fall if you kick them.

(73:15) I have sent them a messenger, a witness against them, like I sent to Pharaoh a messenger.

(73:16) Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger I sent to him, so I took him severely, drowning him and his supporters.

(73:17) If they reject this warning, what will save them on a day that would turn the hair of children white from terror?

(73:18) On that day, the sky will be torn and My angels will be descending. Then they will know what I promised is happening.

(73:19) This is just a reminder and warning. So whoever wants guidance, should take this path to Me, their Lord, by obeying and praying.

(73:20) Oh Muhammad, I know that you have not been staying up two thirds of the night or half, or even a third of the night with a group of your companions. I set the exact length of the night and the day, so I know how long you have been standing, and I knew that you would not fulfill the timing. However, I have forgiven you this shortcoming. So recite what is easy for you to recite in the night. I know some of you will be sick, some traveling, and some will be, for my sake, out battling. So read what is easy for you, establish your prayers, and give the required charity. Give for My sake to all forms of charity. Anything you give, you give for you, for your money with Me it is better and more rewarding. And regularly ask Me for forgiveness, for I am very merciful and forgiving.

There was about a year of separation between when the first part of this chapter was revealed and the revelation of the last verse. During that time, staying up at night in prayer was obligatory to solidify the faith of the early believers. When verse 20 was revealed, staying up at night in prayer changed from an obligation to something that is encouraged but not mandatory.
Verse 20: There are two readings (Qira’at) for this verse. In the other reading it means, “…you have not been staying up two thirds of the night, but you stay up for half, and you stay up for a third…” So the reality is that it was sometimes one and sometimes the other.
